PROJECT 03.01.00
Symposium Foray Second Iterations
In this series of one-sheets, textual content presents a metaphor as a design strategy; A poster is a container. The poster is a container proposes a notion of poster as graphic and textual information carrier. I left out a size qualifier purposefully, as this container could be filled with anything. Also, there is no set size to a poster (think football field, 360' × 160'), and in that respect, the container takes on organic qualities, becoming transmutable, adjusting to the needs of content.
As ephemera, the container goes through a transformative process, finding a second life as an artifact object of record. A critical investigation of 'what is a poster?' illuminated this idea of transformation. Content, visual language and substrate engage the transformative process. If a poster is presenting an event, there will be dates and times. Upon passing of the event, the content has expired and the poster shifts into its next stage in life. A purely visual poster may not expire as quickly, expanding original existence and prolonging the point of transformation. After enough time passes the visual language dates and places itself within a visual context, transforming the poster further into the realm of object as record. Varying degrees of substrate evoke notions of value and in turn, duration. A lower quality / value substrate presents as casual and common, hinting at a shorter transformative process which may lead to the garbage. In contrast, a high quality / value substrate presents as formal and refined and could possibly lead to a second / third life.
